Upcycled Ruffled Heart Shirt

eHow Crafts Blog

If you are lucky enough to have a little girl in your life this Valentine’s Day, you can make this cute refashioned ruffled heart shirt that she will enjoy all year round.

All you need are four thrift shop t-shirts in various colors.

Decide which shirt you’d like to alter to fit your little girl and use one of her t shirts as a pattern. Cut off the sides and the sleeves.

Determine the new sleeve length and cut making sure to angle the top of the sleeve.

Cut a heart out of the front of the t-shirt.

Cut a piece of woven fabric 1/2 an inch bigger than the heart you cut from the front of the shirt.

Cut 3/4 inch strips from the other t-shirts.

Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch length and the highest tension. Since t-shirts are knit fabric when you sew the strips they will automatically ruffle.

Using a contrasting thread sew the ruffles onto the woven heart.

Place the ruffled heart under the cutout on the front of the t-shirt and pin in place.

Sew in place, moving your machine slowly and lifting up on the presser foot frequently so the t-shirt won’t stretch out of shape. Make sure you are catching the ruffled heart under the stitching.

With right sides together, pin the front to the back at the shoulder seams. Sew together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

With right sides together pin the front to the back at the sides. Since knits are notorious for stretching as you sew be sure to start sewing at the bottom so the hem will match up.

With right sides together and matching the underarm seam, pin and sew the sleeves back into the armhole.

Happy Heart Day!
