Need a quick Halloween craft for the kids, or a cute piece of decor that won't break the bank? Make pupkins! You can create one in as little as 5 minutes, using gourds from the grocery store and a few other things you probably have around the house right now -- anything from craft foam and googly eyes to felt, buttons, and brown paper bags.
Things You'll Need
- Assortment of gourds
- Colorful paper and/or craft foam
- Googly eyes
- Small pompoms
- Hot glue gun
- Permanent marker
- Bamboo sticks (optional)
- Pumpkin (optional)
- Floral foam or Styrofoam (optional)
Start by looking over each gourd to find its personality. A long pointed gourd might make a good dachshund. A rounder gourd might make a good Boston terrier or French bulldog. Decide where you want to place the features and mark those locations with a small dot.
Cut out an ear from colored paper or craft foam. Trim until the shape fits the gourd you've selected, then use it as a pattern to cut a second ear.
Cut an inner ear, slightly smaller than the ear shape. Peel off the paper liner from the craft foam and press the inner ear onto the adhesive surface.
Carefully dab hot glue on opposite sides of the large end of the gourd. Attach the ears.
Hot glue guns get very hot. If children are participating in this craft, adult supervision is required.
Glue googly eyes between the ears and a small pompom at the end to create a nose.
Use a permanent marker to draw eyebrows above the googly eyes.
You can create a wider variety of dogs if you paint the gourds before decorating. We used two coats of acrylic craft paint.
Cut out a tongue and glue it in place, if desired.
Optional Display Suggestion
Poke a hole in the bottom of the gourd, using a small screwdriver. Push a bamboo skewer into the hole.
Place floral foam or Styrofoam in the bottom of a pumpkin. Arrange the pupkins in the pumpkin as you would arrange flowers.
